Throughout his school life Robin played in orchestral, jazz, rock and pop bands on various instruments. He auditioned and gained a position with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales on Double Bass. He went on to study music at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and later at the University of Wales Newport.
Working in backing bands in the eighties Robin played alongside stars such as the Nolan Sisters, Lenny Henry, Mike Reid, Joe Longthorne and then joined Brotherhood of Man with whom he toured for ten years at home and abroad.
As well as having a very busy performance schedule, Robin has always found time for teaching, starting as a string tutor for Gwent Authority. He also taught at the University of Wales in both Caerleon and Cardiff campuses. Over the years, Robin has tutored on many orchestral and jazz courses, including taking part in many Rock and Pop showcases for the authority.
His teaching at Hereford College of Arts involves bass tuition and the integration of theory and practice in a performance context.
Research and Professional Practice
Television series’ include Mike Doyle, Owen Money (playing alongside international stars such as Danni Minogue, Gerard Kenny), Sian Cothi, Margaret Williams, Noson Lawen and a host of current Welsh language television shows including Bryn Terfyl at the Faenol Festival, Aled Jones, Kathryn Jenkins, Catrin Finch, supporting Bob Geldof at the Dolgellau Festival and many performances at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. He has been involved in radio performances, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales performance of Bernstein’s Mass and, more recently, at The Albert Hall Proms concerts.
Robin toured for four years with the stage show ‘That’ll Be The Day’ which was voted the most popular and successful current touring show. It was whilst working on this show that he played alongside Sir Cliff Richard.
Jazz features quite strongly in his career with many performances at The Jazz Proms in St David’s Hall, Brecon and Pontypool Jazz Festivals and various jazz clubs alongside Jeff Hooper, Matt Ford, Clare Teal, Chris Dean and also tutoring the rhythm section of the Welsh Youth Jazz Orchestra.
European tours include The Supremes, Temptations, Platters and the West End show ‘Abba-Mania’ – Robin also headlined alongside Sian James at the International Celtic Music Festival in Brittany.
Closer to home are numerous appearances with stars such as Lesley Garrett, The Beverley Sisters, Rosemary Squires, Iris Williams and Peter Karrie, working in most of the main venues in the UK. Tours including Only Men Aloud and Rhydian in the Liverpool Arena, The Alarm in the Millennium Centre and supporting Rod Stewart in the Millenium Stadium – together with the many household names appearing in Pantomime (The Hoff, John Barrowman etc). Robin has played at the New Theatre Cardiff where he has worked on the Panto for most of the last thirty seasons.
Robin’s most recent tours include BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ around Warner’s Hotels and a UK theatre tour with Rhydian (X-Factor) and Richard and Adam (Britain’s Got Talent).
